Welcome Friends & Guests!
Thank you for visiting our website of the South Side Help Center!
The South Side Help Center (SSHC) has been serving Chicago's South
Side for twenty years. Our programs and services have grown and evolved
so that we may better serve the needs of our clients and community.
However, our reason for being remains the same: to provide people
with positive and healthy alternatives.
SSHC is a community-based agency supported by dedicated staff, an
active Board of Director's, and loyal volunteers. The Center sprouted
from one goal to educate the religious community so that they would
be sensitive to the spiritual needs of people dying from HIV/AIDS.
Today our reach extends beyond HIV prevention and now includes direct
care services and a full range of youth programs. Our staff has grown
to 43 employees who work aggressively in the community to provide
people with positive and healthy alternatives. None of this would
have been possible without the leadership of a dedicated Board of
Directors and the support that we have received from the community.
At the South Side Help Center, we live
our mission. We hope this web site provides you with the information
you need.
Sincerely,
Betty Smith
Executive Director

Howard Brown and South Side Help Center Partner to Address HIV; CDC funds three-year project
Howard Brown is pleased to announce that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has awarded a three-year, $950,000 grant to develop and test a culturally tailored HIV intervention for African American men who have sex with men (MSM).Principal investigator Dr. David McKirnan, Ph.D. of The University of Illinois at Chicago and Howard Brown will team with HIV prevention experts at the South Side Help Center (SSHC), a long-standing HIV prevention and direct care agency on the south side of Chicago. “It is indeed an honor to partner with Howard Brown in designing and testing effective interventions for African American men who have sex with men,” said Betty Smith, South Side Help Center Executive Director, (pictured above with Michael Cook , Howard Brown President and CEO). “Given the fact that African American MSM is more likely to contract HIV, interventions which effectively target this group have not been well represented or evaluated in the literature. I feel that this is an historical event—the north and south working in harmony in the fight against HIV/AIDS in the African American community.”
The Wallace Foundation has awarded a grant to the City Of Chicago Children and Youth Services Department. A portion of the grant is being used to implement a participant tracking pilot program. The program will track agency headquarters, staff, data on programs being offered, demographic information, and youth attendance at various programs through out the city.
200 agencies city wide were invited to participate, however 21 agencies will be actively enrolled. South Side Help Center Youth Programs is one of the selected sites to run the pilot. |
